High lift performance cams exert much greater friction forces on the sliding face of a follower. Lowering the sliding friction whilst retaining oil for lubrication during the running in period is one of the main problems facing the designer. Diamond coatings and Superfinishing offer just one solution to this problem. A ground finish will give surface readings of about 0.4 - 0.3RA, a lapped finish will give 0.2RA where a Superfinish will give an amazing 0.05RA. add to this a Diamond coating to negate the need for oil retention and a large part of the running in problem is solved.

In un-coated situations the nitride heat treatment process offers several advantages over carburised treatments, such as excellent levels of hardness, and retainment of dimensional accuracy. The Nitrided component is resilient to softening and will retain its surface hardness up to temperatures of 500 degrees C, where on cooling the whole component will revert to its original hardness. These components are less easily heat damaged by temporary lubrication failure than their carburised counterpart. Nitride hardening improves fatigue strength and a mean hardness of 750-950 HV is achieved by using custom baskets allowing the component to be uniformly exposed to the process.
